My Leadership Beliefs

One question that I often get asked is – What are the traits of an effective leader?  In this post, I would like to share with you my personal beliefs on leadership.  These are by no means the last word on leadership, but aspects that I feel are important and try to live by.

Leadership is about helping others realise their full potential.  Every person has unique and abundant potential.  Help people realise their potential by challenging and stretching them.

Leadership is about making a difference.  Strive to create a positive and lasting impact in all aspects of work and life.  Ask not what you are getting but what you are giving to any situation.

Leadership is about building a compelling view of the future.  Set an inspiring vision that will benefit the organisation and will provide a sense of common purpose and direction to the team.

Leadership is about courage.  Take risks and do not be afraid of treading a new path.  Say what you mean and have the spine to stand up for your beliefs.

Leadership is about trust building.  Trust is a force multiplier.  To build it suspend your own agenda, walk the talk and deliver on promises.

Leadership is about connecting.  You need to touch both the hearts and minds of people.  Communicate and connect with warmth and openness at all levels.  People need to see and hear you for themselves.

Leadership is about integrity.  Always strive to do the right thing so you have a clear conscience and can hold your head high.

Leadership is about the balance of head and heart. You need to both deliver excellent business results and be an empathetic and caring people leader.  Consciously find that balance.

Leadership is about humility.  Do not let success or position go to your head.  Stay humble and grounded.  It will earn you the love and respect of people.  It will also allow you to listen better and avoid making big mistakes.

Finally, leadership is about being yourself.  Each one of us has unique strengths.  So be authentic, dig within yourself, introspect and define your own leadership mantra and style.

I hope these nuggets inspire you and help you hone your own leadership skills.  Please feel free to reach out to share your comments and experiences.
